The team at Health & Travel Insurance Brokers send out a huge congratulations to client Sam Gaze for his amazing Silver Medal win at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games!  The race had an incredible finish, with countryman Anton Cooper racing home in the last 500 metres to take the Gold Medal.

18 year old Sam originates from the Waikato town of Te Awamutu.  He went to Hamilton Boys High School and has spent the last few years competing in National and World Mountain Bike and Road Cycling championship events in New Zealand and around the globe.

During Sam’s intensive training it was also discovered that he has  an abnormally large, but perfectly functioning, heart.  This powerful heart results in Sam suffering from low blood pressure when pushing himself on rides.  But with a little bit of sodium before a race Sam is good to go!

The win was New Zealand’s first gold-silver double of the Commonwealth games, and Anton and Sam upset the hot favourite Dan McConnell with their incredible ride.  The win was also a great birthday present for Sam’s father who is also his coach.

We wish Sam the best of luck for the World Championships which are being held in Norway after the games.  In Sam’s own words:

“… this is the best way of saying, 'I'm coming for you world'. It's looking good for the future.''
