Places to Visit In New Zealand - Rotorua

rotorua places to visit in new zealand

A visit to New Zealand is not complete without visiting the cultural and geothermal wonders of Rotorua.  Often called the cultural heart of New Zealand, Rotorua has many attractions to visit both during the day and in at night.  Here are some of the highlights that we recommend you enjoy.

Bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and natural hot springs are all on your doorstep in Rotorua.  There are a number of places you can pay to view natural hot springs and geysers, or you can visit the local Kura park for free to see mud pools and soak your feet in thermal water.

Visit a pre-European Maori village, go to a Maori cultural show and experience a delicious feast.  Rotorua offers many cultural experiences that combine dramatic performances with delicious food. We recommend Tamaki Village, Mitai Village and Te Puia for authentic experiences.

There are many epic biking trails in Rotorua from beginner and advanced trails through the Californian Redwoods forest to a world-class downhill mountain biking track.  If you love biking then we recommend checking out the trails on offer, with many options to rent a suitable bike in Rotorua.

Rotorua has a couple of leisure parks where you can see native birds, flora and fauna including Rainbow Springs animal conservation park where you can get up close to New Zealand’s endangered species like the Tuatara and Kiwi.

The agrodome is a fun place to visit if you enjoy animal shows or are keen to visit a New Zealand farm.  They have daily farm-shows which showcase NZ sheep and cattle dogs and you get the opportunity to feed and pat baby farm animals.  A great place to visit if you are travelling with children.

A new highlight for both day and evening adventure is the treetop walk through the Redwoods forest.  The 553-metre-long walkway is located 12-metres above the forest floor giving you a unique perspective of the forest.  The night-time experience offers visitors the opportunity to explore the forest under the shroud of darkness, illuminated by New Zealand designer David Trubridges’ bespoke lanterns & feature lights.  A truly memorable and unique experience.

Adventure enthusiasts can also enjoy the selection of weird and wonderful activities on offer from zorbing (rolling down the hill in a giant bubble), ziplining through the forest, Swoop on a giant swing, to sledging on boards down white water rapids!

We recommend you stay a few days in Rotorua to truly experience all it has to offer, and Rotorua really does have something for everyone.
