Top North Island New Zealand Outdoor Adventures

If you’re a keen outdoors person then New Zealand (NZ) is the perfect destination for you.  With hundreds of outdoor options spread out all over our country you will be able to soak up both our scenery and our hospitality while having the adventure of a lifetime.  Here are a list of some of our favourite North Island adventures:

Sandboarding the Te Paki Sand Dunes

Surfing down giant sand dunes is a highlight of any trip to the Far North of NZ.  Towering well over 150 metres high in some parts, sandboarding (or sand surfing as it’s also known) down these monster dunes is the ultimate thrillseekers’ adventure.  Do it on your own or join a tour to get some tips from an expert!

Muriwai - Woodhills Tree Adventures

Tree Adventures is a tree-top challenge course offering an impressive range of suspended obstacles and ziplines.  Challenge your balance, build confidence and unleash your inner monkey while enjoying the beauty of the Woodhill Forest in West Auckland.  With 10 high-wire courses ranging from 2 to 14 metres above the forest floor, Tree Adventures have adventure options to suit novice climbers through to hardened adrenalin junkies.

Rotorua Luge

The world famous Luge opened in 1986 in Rotorua. The part go-cart, part toboggan is gravity fuelled with full rider control over speed and direction using a unique braking and steering system. Pull back on the handlebars to slow down or stop, release slightly to accelerate and enjoy the ride. The Luge is great for any age, you can ride the sweeping bends of the Scenic Track through the Redwoods Forest or try their intermediate and advanced tracks. Once is never enough.

Taupo Skydiving

A must-do is a skydive in Taupo - the most amazing dropzone in the world.  You'll see volcanoes, coast-to-coast views of the North Island and the incredible shores of Lake Taupo. Most operators let you choose from four heights – 9,000 ft, 12,000 ft, 15,000 ft.

Waitomo Caves Black Water Rafting

Black Water Rafting is the most fun you can have in the dark.  Experienced guides will take you safely through the stunning underworld of Ruakuri Cave.  This adventure includes the chance to abseil, weave, jump, climb, and float through a deep underground, glowworm-studded, subterranean cave.  It will be one of the most unreal subterranean journeys that you’ll ever experience.

Bungy jumping

Some say the Kiwi invention of commercial bungy jumping was the birth of our world famous adventure tourism.  For over 30 years people have been experiencing the adrenaline rush of free falling headfirst into the abyss with only an elastic rope to break their fall.  Aj Hackett bungy has operations in both the South and North Islands, and other operators also provide options in Taupo, Taihape and Rotorua.
