The Bay of Islands has stunning subtropical weather and its known not only for its natural beauty but also impressive history. For those that love fishing, beaches and water activities, it's paradise.
A three-hour drive or 35 minute flight north of Auckland, the Bay of Islands encompasses 144 islands between Cape Brett and the Purerua Peninsula and includes the boutique towns of Opua, Pahia, Russell and Kerikeri.
Paihia is an excellent base from which to explore the Bay of Islands. From here you can take a boat cruise, kayak, dive and fish in a maritime adventure playground with an abundance of wildlife including penguins, dolphins, marlin and whales.
We recommend a day strolling around the beautiful historic town of Russell. Russell holds an important place in New Zealand's history, being the country's first sea port, its first European settlement and New Zealand's first capital in nearby Okiato. The town's streets retain their original layout and names from 1843, and many of its historic buildings can still be visited today.
Be sure to visit the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds, one of New Zealand's most significant historic sites. This is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 between the British Crown and more than 500 Maori chiefs. The treaty agreed the terms by which New Zealand would become a British colony. Today the Treaty grounds are an opportunity to learn about Maori culture and the historical events associated with the signing of the treaty. You can visit the Treaty House to see a replica of the original treaty and one of the largest Maori war canoes in the country.
