Travel Insurance for Snow Sports: What IEC Visa Holders and Powder-Chasers Need to Know

If you're heading off on a working holiday to Canada or chasing snow across Japan or Europe, travel insurance might not be the most exciting thing on your list, but it’s one of the most important. Especially if snow sports are on the agenda.

Whether you're planning to hit the resorts, hike into the backcountry, or spend a season working in Whistler on an IEC visa, here’s what you need to know about getting travel insurance that actually covers what you're doing.

Why Standard Travel Insurance Might Not Cut It

A lot of off-the-shelf travel insurance policies exclude snow sports altogether or only cover a narrow list of activities. That’s when working with a travel insurance broker helps. Brokers aren’t tied to one company. We work with a range of providers to help you understand your options and find a policy that matches what you need for your trip.

We look at things like:

  • Are you just cruising the groomed runs, or planning some off-piste adventures?
  • Are you working a season, or just heading over for a couple of weeks?
  • Do you need longer-term cover for up to two years?

These details matter, and they can affect what you’re covered for.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Snow Sports?

Short answer: sometimes.

Not all travel insurance includes snow sports automatically. Some policies cover skiing or snowboarding on marked runs. Some need you to add it on. Others exclude things like tobogganing, snowmobiling or off-piste unless you’re with a guide.

We help you figure out:

  • What activities are included (and which ones need a tick box)
  • What "on-piste" vs "off-piste" means for your policy
  • Whether your winter gear is protected
  • How trip interruptions or closures could affect your cover

Need to brush up on what counts as backcountry or off-piste? Canadian Adventure Company’s glossary is a good start for understanding ski terminology.

The good news is, you don’t need to interpret all the fine print on your own. We will help you get the cover that’s right for you.

IEC Visa And Travel Insurance: The Canadian Connection

If you’re heading to Canada on an IEC Working Holiday visa, travel insurance is a requirement. You need to show proof of cover when you arrive, or risk only getting a visa that lasts for part of your stay.

According to the Government of Canada’s official IEC page, your insurance must:

  • Be valid for the entire duration of your stay
  • Cover medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation
  • Be shown to the border officer when you land in Canada

If you want a two-year work permit, you’ll need a policy that covers the full two years. Some providers won’t do that. We can help you find one who does.

Get Set Up for the Slopes

We’ve helped loads of Kiwis sort out their travel insurance before heading off into the snow, whether they’re riding runs in Niseko or working night shifts in Banff.

If you’re planning a trip involving skiing, snowboarding or anything that gets your boots in the snow, have a chat with a travel insurance broker who knows what questions to ask.

We can help you figure out:

  • What you’re covered for (and what you’re not)
  • How long your policy needs to run
  • What to show when you land in Canada
  • Where to get the paperwork sorted early so there’s one less thing to stress about
